I had an artbot called Mr Rembrandt back in – oh, 1975 or so – that was almost exactly the same as this homebuilt. It had four pens, and was driven by wheels instead of vibration, but in no way was this idea conceived by anyone from FIRST Robotics or PDXBot. Disregard any comments to the contrary.

Put one of these together with my kids — ages 4 and 8 — yesterday. They loved being involved in making it, even if all we were doing was taping things to a cup. And they were thrilled to watch it dance. They called it MarkerBot Mach 1.

This thing looks and functions as the search and selection committee for the San Francisco Art Institutes SFAI previous and new (two years ago) Presidents.

I.e., there seems to have been the same amount of human input to the out put. :-)

There is no downside to building a project like this with your kids. It makes a horrible racket, looks a wee bit dangerous, and scribbles all over a sheet of paper randomly in three colors. I repeat: IT SCRIBBLES ALL OVER A SHEET OF PAPER RANDOMLY IN THREE COLORS!! What’s not to like?

I have a Zoom book (from the 70’s TV Show) that documents how to build one of these. This is NOT an idea which is original to the FIRST Robotics team 1318. I can scan the book if you want to see it. The only difference is the fact that they use a weight on the end of a string which is attached to a vertically mounted motor probably to make it easier for kids to fabricate. Other than that, it’s the EXACT SAME device.

Actually, I encourage the combination of art and robots, as my moniker would imply. I do digital art and animation for a living and have had the site artbot.com for 10 years. Great job on _your_ Artbot! (I, too, love the kid taking credit for the robot’s work!)

Maybe YOU wouldn’t want to keep anything it draws, but I sure would. I see all kinds of things in random patterns and lines like these, they’re nice to have around as an inspiration point.

The most interesting this about this, for me, is that the kid said “thanks” when the adult said “nice picture”, as if the kid had created something. Is this the future of robotics?

we've played around with a bunch of variations of this idea in the larning technologies center here at the science museum of minnesota. check out this other drawing robots: wobble painter wave draw roller paint They are great first experiments for kids to learn about making "creative machines."
